Profile
Established in 1952, the Department of Assamese is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments of the institution. It has played a vital role in its academic evolution and, since the post-independence period, has contributed significantly to the expansion of Assamese language education across Upper Assam. Eminent scholars such as Dr. Bishwanarayan Shastri once served on its faculty, and today the department is recognized as one of the leading Assamese departments in the state.
Academic Programmes
The department began with Intermediate-level education and later introduced undergraduate programmes. It started offering the postgraduate M.A. programme in 2014, the M.Phil. programme in 2020 and the Ph.D. programme in 2022.
Students & Research
Students of the department have achieved success in diverse fields, and several have ventured into self-employment. Many have consistently qualified in national and state-level examinations such as NET, SLET and JRF. Even before the institution attained autonomous status, the department recorded outstanding results in undergraduate examinations under Dibrugarh University, and its students are known for securing admission to postgraduate and research programmes at prestigious institutions.
The faculty members have successfully completed a significant number of research projects and continue to engage actively in academic research.

Achievements
Students of the department have consistently excelled in literary and cultural competitions, and many have earned distinction in the intellectual landscape of Assam. The department has received the Best Department title eight times during the Annual College Week, the highest number of any department.
