The Institutional Level Biotech Hub was established during the 2011-12 session with financial assistance from the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India under NER-BPMC.

The major objective is to provide basic laboratory facilities with necessary equipment to carry on biotechnological research for the benefit of all stakeholders and to bring awareness to the field of Biotechnology. Since its establishment, the DBT-sponsored hub has provided:

  • Basic laboratory facilities and research equipment to all stakeholders.
  • Students with an overview of the finer aspects of biotechnology and molecular biology.
  • Hands-on training for teachers and students of neighboring institutions.
  • In-house workshops, invited talks, and awareness/outreach programs.
  • Observation of National Science Day, World Environment Day, etc.

The hub is well equipped for carrying out research both on Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology. Major achievements include:

  • Isolation of MAPs from Paederia foetida (vedai lota) and Ocimum sanctum (Tulshi).
  • Antimicrobial and antioxidant studies of MAPs showing inhibition of citrus canker disease in Citrus lemon.
  • Inhibition of red rot disease in sugarcane using MAPs from Tulshi.
  • Phytoremediation of hydrocarbon and heavy metals contaminated soil using Dolomiaea costus.
  • Study of ground water quality in Upper Assam and human health effects.
  • Plant regeneration by somatic embryogenesis in Azadirachta indica (Neem).
  • In vitro micropropagation of Aloe vera, Brahmi, Orchids, and Banana.
  • Phytochemical Screening and GC-MS Analysis of endemic plants like K. assamica.
  • Hepato-Protective Effect studies of Jackfruit extracts against hepatotoxicity.
  • In vitro germination of Bhut jolokiya from Khashi Hills.
  • Training UG/PG students and scholars on modern sophisticated instruments.

  • Continue research on active biomolecules from Paederia foetida & Ocimum sanctum.
  • Study enzymatic degradation of hydrocarbons & heavy metals.
  • Study health complications from heavy metals in ground water.
  • Tissue culture & micropropagation of orchid/medicinal plants.
  • Small scale Mushroom cultivation.
  • In vitro seed germination of Orchids, Bhut Jalakiya, and Citrus sinensis.
  • Isolation/characterization of endophytes from K. assamica.
  • Effect of endophytic fungal metabolites in bioassays.
  • Scientific conservation work on endemic medicinal plant K. assamica.
  • Provide UG Botany/Zoology students exposure to Molecular Biology Techniques.
  • Organize Workshops, Training, Outreach & Awareness Programs.
  • Capacity building for regional biology teachers and school students.
