Profile
The Department of Geography was established in 1999 under the erstwhile North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), marking the beginning of geographical studies in the Lakhimpur region. The introduction of the Major course in 2004–05 strengthened its academic foundation and led to notable achievements, including university toppers and a Best Graduate of Dibrugarh University (2007). With the adoption of the semester system in 2011–12, the department expanded its intake capacity from 20 to 40 students to meet growing demand.
In 2023, with the upgradation of the college to North Lakhimpur University, the department entered a new phase of growth, continuing its legacy of academic excellence through dedicated faculty and enthusiastic students.

Mission
The department focuses on Physical Geography as the foundation of geographical studies, emphasizing natural processes such as floods, which are a recurring feature of the Brahmaputra Valley. Recognizing the increasing impact of human activities on natural systems, it promotes the concept of “living with floods” and sustainable environmental practices.
Its mission is to equip students with eco-friendly geographical knowledge and to foster a deeper understanding of the Earth, encouraging a balanced and responsible relationship with nature.
