32nd Governor of Assam & Chancellor of North Lakhimpur University

Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya is the 32nd Governor of Assam and the Chancellor of North Lakhimpur University, having assumed office on 30th July 2024. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Governor of Sikkim and was a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (MLC).

Hailing from Varanasi, a historic city on the banks of the Ganges in northern India, Shri Acharya began his career in education in 1973 with the establishment of Bhartiya Shishu Mandir in Ramnagar. He played a significant role in promoting education through institutions such as Sishu Shiksha Niketan, Shri Kalidas Shiksha Sansthan Junior High School, and Smt. Pyari Devi Intermediate College, and is regarded as one of the pioneers in opening private schools in the villages of Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Entering active politics in 1990 as the Divisional President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Ramnagar, he went on to hold several important organizational positions, including General Secretary for the Varanasi–Chandauli district in 1995 and District President of the BJP for Varanasi in 1996. He later served as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Development Corporation (UPFDC).

In 2015, he was elected as a Member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council and was re-elected in 2021, reflecting his continued contribution and influence in both the educational and political spheres.
