About North Lakhimpur University

North Lakhimpur University stands as a beacon of higher education in Assam, having recently transitioned from the prestigious North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous) into a Public State University. Established by upgrading the college under Assam Act No. LVIII of 2023, the university is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.

The University traces its rich academic heritage to 1952, when North Lakhimpur College was founded with the vision of providing quality higher education in the region. Guided by its enduring motto, “Let noble thoughts come from all directions,” the institution has consistently fostered an academic environment that nurtures critical thinking, innovation, ethical values, and social responsibility.

Over the decades, the institution achieved several notable milestones. It celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2002, received DBT and DST financial assistance in 2008 and 2009, and was accorded the prestigious College with Potential for Excellence (CPE) status by the UGC in 2010 and again in Phase-II in 2014. A Biotech Hub supported by DBT, Government of India, was established in 2011. The institution was granted Autonomous status by UGC in 2013, which was later extended up to 2025–26.

Academic expansion remained a key focus, with the introduction of multiple Postgraduate programmes across humanities, social sciences, science, and technology. The institution also strengthened its research ecosystem through M.Phil programmes, a DST-FIST project, an Innovation Cell recognized by AICTE (MHRD), and a SWAYAM chapter of UGC. Infrastructure development included a digital library, a synthetic athletic track supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, and a Skill Hub recognized by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in 2022. The institution was also awarded ISO certification.

In 2018, the institution was accredited by NAAC with a B++ grade (CGPA 2.9). Alongside academic excellence, strong emphasis has always been placed on sports, cultural activities, literary pursuits, career counseling, and student support services, enabling students to excel at state and national levels.

With its elevation to North Lakhimpur University, the institution now enters a new phase of growth—committed to advanced teaching, interdisciplinary research, innovation, skill development, and community engagement, while continuing to uphold its legacy of inclusive and holistic education.
