Dr Ratul Kr Lahan

Assistant Professor | Economics

Dr. Ratul Kumar Lahan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at North Lakhimpur University, a role he has held since June 2016. With nearly sixteen years of teaching experience in higher education, including four years at the postgraduate level, his academic expertise focuses on rural economics, livelihood diversification, mathematical economics, and econometrics. Prior to joining North Lakhimpur University, he served as an Assistant Professor at North Bank College from 2010 to 2016. In addition to his classroom instruction, Dr. Lahan is a recognized Research Supervisor, currently guiding three Ph.D. scholars and having successfully supervised ten postgraduate dissertations.

Dr. Lahan earned his Ph.D. from Dibrugarh University in 2022 with a dissertation titled Livelihood Diversification in Rural Areas of Assam: A Study in the Flood-Affected Areas of Dhemaji and Lakhimpur Districts. He completed his Master's degree in Economics at Dibrugarh University in 2006, securing first class second position with specializations in Mathematical Economics and Econometrics. His academic credentials are further backed by clearing the State Level Eligibility Test (SLET NE) in 2006 and the UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) in 2012. Continuously committed to professional development, he has completed multiple Faculty Induction Programs, Orientation Programs, Refresher Courses, and over ten Short-Term Training Courses and Faculty Development Programs.

Alongside his teaching and research, Dr. Lahan plays a prominent role in institutional governance and administration at North Lakhimpur University. He serves as the Public Information Officer and Deputy Director of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), both appointments initiated in February 2026. Since 2023, he has functioned as the Nodal Officer for the university’s Samarth Portal, while also mentoring affiliated colleges across Lakhimpur District on portal admissions. His broader institutional contributions include serving as Member Secretary of the Career Counselling Cell, Convenor of the Entrepreneurship Cell, Coordinator for the National Academic Depository (NAD), and Assistant Coordinator of the Publication Committee.

Dr. Lahan’s research contributions encompass three completed minor research projects, two funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and one by North Lakhimpur University. As an academic organizer, he served as Convenor for the 2025 International Seminar on The Treaty of Yandabo and Nineteenth Century Assam, funded by the Directorate of Historical and Antiquarian Studies, Government of Assam, and North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), as well as a UGC-sponsored National Seminar in 2014. Beyond his scholarly work, Dr. Lahan is an accomplished literary figure who writes poetry and literary essays for leading magazines and newspapers across Assam. His debut poetry collection, Panigacha, earned him the prestigious Kabyapran Sujauddin Ahmed Award from the Sodou Asom Kabi Sanmilon in 2017. During his four-year tenure as Professor in Charge of the North Lakhimpur College Magazine, the publication was awarded three Gold Medals and one Silver Medal at the Inter-College Youth Festival.
